Ebook About In this charming new cozy mystery series from national bestselling author Vicki Delany, a New York City expat-turned-Cape Cod tea shop owner must solve the murder of a local real estate developer to help her feisty grandmother out of a jam . . . As the proud proprietor and head pastry chef of Tea by the Sea, a traditional English tearoom on the picturesque bluffs of Cape Cod, Lily Roberts has her hands full, often literally. But nothing keeps her busier than steering her sassy grandmother, Rose, away from trouble. Rose operates the grand old Victorian B & B adjacent to Lily’s tea shop. But an aggressive real estate developer, Jack Ford, is pushing hard to rezone nearby land, with an eye toward building a sprawling golf resort, which would drive Rose and Lily out of business. Tempers are already steaming, but things really get sticky when Ford is found dead at the foot of Rose’s property and the police think she had something to do with his dramatic demise. So Lily starts her own investigation and discovers Ford’s been brewing bad blood all over town. Now, it’s down to Lily to stir up some clues, sift through the suspects, and uncover the real killer before Rose is left holding the tea bag. “A satisfying cozy with a beautifully described setting and a cast of charming, small-town characters. Share this new series with fans of Laura Childs’ Tea Shop mysteries.” —BooklistBook Tea & Treachery (Tea by the Sea Mysteries Book 1) Review :
I really wanted to like this book. The premise is solid, the setting is interesting but two of the three main characters so overwhelmed the plot that I finally stopped reading mid-way through. Rose, the grandmother, is written as a narcissist who seems incapable of seeing anything but her own wants. The “best friend” comes across as a scatterbrain and that leaves the heroine looking like a limp dishrag. I kept hoping someone would murder Rose. Now, that would be an interesting plot! I was really looking forward to the start of this series. I love the setting on the Cape, the beautiful B and B, the tea shop and the main character Lily. I have to say, however, that the grandmother, Rose and the best friend Bernie leave a lot to be desired. Rose is nothing but a bully, who I think is abusive to her granddaughter expecting her to handle problems at the B and B, as well as cook every breakfast and run her own business. After the murder she demands and uses emotional blackmail to get Lily to do things outside her comfort zone. Bernie is not as bad but more clueless with her "writing" career, she has no problems asking Lily for advice and help even when she is up to her elbows baking in the Tea room. At least she occasionally helps her friend out but is pretty oblivious to what she may want. While Lily is not a pushover she is the only one working and also being expected to save Rose's skin after a contractor she verbally abused, in front of plenty of witnesses and in writing, is killed on their property. While it does appear that the detective on the case may railroad Rose as the quilty party, she brought it on herself by being over the top obnoxious. The mystery is a pretty good one, although I don't see why some of the suspects shared the information they did with our sleuths, there were plenty of suspects. I also found hope in a couple of other characters that join in the book, I feel Simon and Matt hold some promise as characters.I had enough I enjoyed to try the next book in the series, but if Rose doesn't find some redeeming values and Bernie doesn't get a clue it would sadly probably be my last.
